How to Progress in Sonic Adventure Guide

Sonic Adventure (Sonic  Adventure DX) is one of the most beloved Sonic games in the series. It pretty much molded the 3D Sonic games in the future. Even though the Dreamcast is dead, this game can still be played through more ways than one. However, some people have a hard time playing the game when it comes to the other characters.

How to Unlock Characters and Progression

Sonic Adventure Characters

When the game begins, you only get to control Sonic, so playing him to progress the story will make him meet other characters. When those characters are met, that’s when you can finally play them. The playable characters are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, E102 Gamma, and Big.

In terms of progression, one must play all six characters and complete their individual campaigns. Once all six are finished, you can unlock the final story, which is Super Sonic, and end the game. Story progression in chronological order isn’t required. Just play which character you want at your own pace and switch when you get tired of playing one over the other.

How to Play Each Character

This is the guide that you need when you’re confused about how to play and complete each character’s campaign, because they are different.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic Gameplay

Sonic is the very straightforward one, because you just play him like any platforming character. He jumps, rolls, spins, and runs fast. While he is the easiest concept to play, he has the most levels and a couple of boss fights. Speaking of boss fights, his final boss is hard, so be patient. Super Sonic also plays like Sonic, so that’s the last campaign to get through.

Miles “Tails” Prower

Tails Gameplay

Tails’ gameplay is the same as Sonic’s. You just do platforming on the stages to make it to the end of the level. Tails is actually easier to use than Sonic, because he can also jump, spin, roll,  run fast, and fly. Being able to fly makes Tails breeze through the levels. However, there is a sort of racing concept here. Tails has to finish the level before Sonic or Eggman does. It’s not hard, but when you’re playing on greater difficulties, Sonic or Eggman can beat you.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles Gameplay

Knuckles’ concept is different because his focus is not on getting to the end of the level. He has to find Chaos Emerald Shards in each stage. This can be tricky because the Shards can be located in tricky spots, and they are always random, so there’s no point in looking at a guide. Don’t worry, because you have an Emerald Radar. The Shard icons will beep, telling you that a Shard is near. Knuckles can also fly, climb, and dig (when he has the power up). Find those Shards and don’t worry about the time.

Amy Rose

Amy Gameplay

This is where the game slaps you in the face with some difficulty. Amy’s goal is also to reach the end of the level, but there’s a robot chasing her. She has to make sure not to get caught by the robot. The problem is that Amy is slow as hell compared to the other characters. She does have a hammer to hit those enemies, and while she’s running, she can hit the enemies with a dashing attack. Amy’s difficulty is more about her being a chore to use.

E102 Gamma

Gamma Gameplay

The same as Sonic’s style, but Gamma has a gun. While Gamma doesn’t move that fast, he can fly and shoot. His stages are hard as hell because they can be fast and furious. It’s like a bullet hell in some portions and can be challenging. It’s fun, but you may get frustrated in some parts.

Big the Cat

Big Gameplay

This guy is notorious for being hated by a lot of players, and that’s because of his campaign. Big the Cat will go fishing, and in order for you to finish his levels, you need to fish for a Froggy. The controls are abysmal, but the good thing is that the fishing spot is right there. You don’t need to lug Big around because he is slow as hell. Just fish, Froggy, and you’re done; in fact, you can finish his campaign in less than 30 minutes if you’re good at fishing.
