The Nintendo Switch 2 is the latest console from the gaming giant. People remember when the Switch 1 came out, people loved it, and it has sold over 150 million units. Unfortunately, while the year of being in circulation isn’t that high yet, the Switch 2 seems to be underperforming for now.
Nintendo cuts Switch 2 production
News broke out that Nintendo has cut production of the Switch 2 by 30%. This means that they’re either going slowly at the moment or will eventually stop production for the time being due to oversupply. The Switch 2 doesn’t seem to be flying off the shelves now, or it is just stagnant after being out since June of 2025. Right now, the Switch 2’s sales have ended around 17 million copies, so that’s way off the Nintendo Switch 1’s sales.
Why the Switch 2’s sales stagnate?
We can come up with a few reasons, but these are just our speculations. None of these can be factual, but they can make you think “oh, that might be the case”.
No reason to upgrade to the Switch 2 yet
A lot of Nintendo’s newer games are coming exclusively to the Switch 2. However, they still have a ton of games available for the Switch 1 that are also for the Switch 2. Most people wouldn’t bother buying a Switch 2 yet unless the game is that good. Most people are content with their Switch 1 for now and might upgrade in the future.
Cost of games and other Nintendo fees
Switch 2 games do cost a lot, so before someone upgrades to the Switch 2, is buying it for the price tag enough just for one game? Those Switch 1 games won’t work on the 2 if they are physically based. They use different chips, and you still need to buy them digitally as well. That’s another problem: Nintendo is charging a lot for these online services that you can usually enjoy for free.
Political situation and rising costs
Outside of the Switch 2 debacle and the gaming world, prices are just rising today. With the conflict in the Middle East and tariff costs, gaming is becoming expensive. This isn’t just for Nintendo, but as of now, they’re the ones that have a new console out. Most people stick to their PC or console that isn’t Nintendo. They just want to game, and there are still a ton of games out there that are good, and they haven’t played just yet.
