We recently had a list of 5 Bad Video Game Sequels. So we’ll pick up a list of the 5 Best Video Game Sequels. We’re not ranking them, but just giving them the benefit that they are good games. There are a lot of them to mention, so let’s just start at 5.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles

One of the best and original concepts was where you had to attach a Sonic 3 cartridge on top of a Sonic and Knuckles cartridge. The game is just amazing being able to choose Sonic and Tails, Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles. You get to play over 10 levels since both games combined their stages. It has everything you love about the Sonic games with fast-paced running, some platforming, and boss battles to boot.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim needs no introduction, and people still joke about how many versions of this game exist. Skyrim is just a good game where you have all the freedom in the world. You can choose to carve and follow your own path, ignoring the main quest. You’ll be stuck in quests even before you decide to continue with the game. The gameplay itself is very straightforward, and you can play in first or third person view. Don’t forget about how the modding community has been supporting this game over the years. You don’t have to deal with the outdated graphics or wait for a remake when you can play it with mods.
Red Dead Redemption 2

The first game is already impressive, but Red Dead Redemption 2 blows it out of the water. Still utilizing the theme of the wild west, RDR2 amps that up to a higher level. There’s a reason people call this GTA in the wild west, because you can goof around with the civilians before progressing your main quest. Attention to detail is always there with everyone doing their own thing, and the animations are unique, making the world feel alive.
Half Life 2

All the jokes about Half-Life 3 not being made are probably because of how good Half-Life 2 was. Aside from the graphical update, Half Life 2 is just a better game. It continues the story from the first game and adds new lovable and memorable characters. More guns, more mystery, and more enemy aliens for you to boot. Maybe it is better off that we don’t get a 3, but it did have a sequel, sort of, in the form of Half Life Alyx.
Kingdom Hearts 2

The first Kingdom Hearts brought your favorite Squaresoft (at the time) and Disney characters together. Now, Kingdom Hearts 2, under the guise of Square Enix, amplified all of that. While a confusing sequel in terms of storytelling, KH2 remains one of the best sequels in the series. An updated gameplay mechanic comes in and amps up everything. More characters are added due to Square Enix having more games after, and more Disney and original worlds to explore.
