The original Gothic 1 release was back in 2001. It’s been 25 years since then, and the remake launched to some good reviews and good sales. Let’s take a look at how Gothic 1 Remake is doing and whether you might think of getting it, or not.
The Release
Gothic 1 Remake was officially released on June 5, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S after spending several years in development at Alkimia Interactive and being published by THQ Nordic. The remake faithfully recreates the original 2001 cult RPG while modernizing its visuals with Unreal Engine 5, improving combat, animations, world design, and expanding parts of the story that were underdeveloped in the original release. Prior to launch, the game was showcased through multiple trailers and a standalone “Nyras Prologue” demo, allowing the developers to gather community feedback and refine the final experience.
The Current State and Sales
The remake has launched in a strong position both critically and commercially. On Steam, it holds a Very Positive user rating with tens of thousands of reviews, indicating that both longtime Gothic fans and newcomers have responded well to the game’s faithful recreation of the original atmosphere. While some players have noted that the remake retains a degree of the rough, unforgiving design that made the original famous, many reviewers consider this part of its charm rather than a flaw. Alkimia Interactive has also committed to releasing post-launch updates and patches to further improve performance and gameplay.

Commercially, Gothic 1 Remake has exceeded expectations for a niche European RPG. Within its first week, the game sold more than 500,000 copies across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, making it one of THQ Nordic’s most successful recent releases. Steam performance has also been impressive, reaching nearly 78,000 concurrent players shortly after launch while maintaining strong review scores and player engagement. The sales milestone demonstrates that there is still a significant audience for classic RPGs when they are modernized without losing the identity that made them popular in the first place.
A Short Look at the Game
Let’s take a short look at the story and gameplay of this remarkable remake.
The Story
The story of Gothic 1 Remake takes place in the Kingdom of Myrtana, which is locked in a brutal war against invading orcs. To supply the kingdom with magical ore needed to forge powerful weapons, King Rhobar II forces criminals and prisoners to work in the mines of Khorinis. To prevent anyone from escaping, a group of powerful mages creates a magical barrier around the mining colony.

However, the spell goes horribly wrong, expanding beyond its intended size and trapping not only the prisoners but also the mages and guards inside. The prisoners quickly overthrow their captors and establish their own lawless society within what becomes known as the Colony.
The Gameplay

Combat has been completely modernized while remaining faithful to the deliberate and tactical style of the original game. Battles rely on proper timing, blocking, dodging, and learning enemy attack patterns instead of button mashing. As players gain experience, they can train with mentors to improve weapon proficiency, magic, and other skills, making the Nameless Hero noticeably stronger over time. The sense of progression is one of the remake’s defining features, as the player evolves from a weak prisoner struggling against basic creatures into a powerful warrior capable of facing the Colony’s toughest enemies.
A major gameplay mechanic is choosing between the Colony’s three rival factions: the Old Camp, the New Camp, and the Swamp Camp. Joining a faction unlocks exclusive quests, equipment, trainers, and story paths, encouraging multiple playthroughs. Player choices also influence relationships with characters and determine how certain events unfold throughout the game.
