If you’re gaming on PC (heck, even if you’re not), if you’re a gamer, then you would know what STEAM is. It is a platform where anyone can make games for free. They can then get games for free and play them. Let’s face it, the biggest titles and indie games get bought and used by players. However, did you know that VALVE is the company behind Steam, and they are reaching their 30th anniversary this August 24, 2026.
Early Beginnings
Valve was established by Mike Harrington and Gabe Newell back in 1996. These two were former employees from Microsoft. They founded Valve and started development on Half Life, which was released in 1998. Half Life was a monstrous success, and more games followed in its wake, like Team Fortress and the juggernaut itself, Counter-Strike. Sadly, Harrington left Valve around 2000, selling all of his stake to Newell.

Development of Steam

Harrington leaving didn’t hinder progress, and it was full steam ahead. In 2003, the very first iteration of Steam came out. However, it wasn’t a success right away. In fact, people hated it because it was a mess. Keep in mind, this was 2003; not everyone had good access to the internet. Don’t forget about the fact that the platform was a buggy mess at the time.

How Steam Got So Popular
Valve’s initial Steam launch was definitely a problem; however, they were smart enough to get over the hurdle when they took the necessary steps.
Releasing New Games
Half Life and Counter-Strike were Valve’s bread and butter. In the late 2000s’, Valve went off firing on all cylinders. You have games like Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, Portal, and Left 4 Dead that exploded the company’s reputation. Plus, in the early 2010s’, Valve also went on to make more games like Half Life: Alyx, Portal 2, and DOTA 2. Unfortunately, this was the last time Valve made a series of games, but they still have some games in production like Deadlock.

Improving the Steam Store
The notoriety of those games made new players place their eyes on Steam. This was the late 2000s; internet connections had become more accessible, and PC hardware was becoming so much better. This meant that Valve had to improve the store page. That’s why Steam today is a success because of what Valve did. You have simple and great features like a review system, a fantastic refund policy, and community tools you can use.

What Will Happen in the Anniversary?
There really isn’t any announcement from Valve, but we can expect (maybe) a sale. We’re just having fun here, but think about a minimum of 30% discounts on select games. It could also be possible that they give out free games. It has happened in the past where players got Half Life or Left 4 Dead games for free. Regardless of what happens, it is a gift to have Steam due to Valve being a competent company. People say that it will be sad not knowing what will happen when Gabe is gone. Right now, Steam/Valve is doing well and being loved because of what Gabe does. Who knows, maybe it will reach another 30 years.
