Japanese Government is Granting Funding for Indie Game Developers

Indie (independent) video game developers are popping out left and right. It’s been that way for years, so the big-time players aren’t the only ones making these games. Several examples of indie games that have blown into success are Palworld, Expedition 33, and Silksong. It’s not easy to be an independent game developer, especially when you need money to make the game. Here comes the Japanese government to help these small-time developers finish their game.

What is the Japanese government’s plan for funding indie game developers?

Video game Developer

In recent years, the Japanese government has increasingly recognized the value of indie (independent) game developers—small teams or individuals creating games outside big corporate systems. To encourage innovation and global competitiveness, the government has started funding and supporting indie game creators.

Japan’s government funding for indie games represents a strategic shift toward nurturing creativity and global competitiveness in the gaming industry. While still evolving, these initiatives are helping smaller developers gain visibility, experiment with new ideas, and bring uniquely Japanese experiences to a worldwide audience.

How does the funding work?

The Japanese government, mainly through organizations like the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), offers financial assistance and development programs for indie developers. These include grants, subsidies, and incubation programs aimed at helping small studios cover development costs, marketing, and international exposure.

Qualified people or developers will be given a grant of 10 million Yen or $60,000. There are several requirements before you can apply for or be given a grant. One, you have to be a native or at least have your studio in Japan. Two is that there should be no big-time backers or funders for this project. This means that you have to be purely independent.

It’s also worth noting that they want an original IP. Then again, being independent workers, they have no access to the established characters or IP  names in the video game world. It is only a fixed amount for qualified teams, so if they need more funding, they have to get it on their own.

Is this enough money for the game development?

Obviously not, but some smaller game devs can make something out of this. Remember the game Flappy Bird? The programmer was just one guy who sold it on the app stores. It made millions from it, with funding probably not even reaching the amount of the grant that is being given ($60k). He took it down because he was shocked by how well the game was being received and making money. Why he took it down and made the revenue stop coming was clearly his decision.

That amount of money is still good, and if you’re qualified, why not just try to apply for it? After all, you’ll be seeking added funding anyway, so you have 60k less to worry about with your budget. Just remember to always be upfront in case you’re seeking out crowdfunding methods. Most backers will appreciate and like the fact that you are using funds given by the Japanese government.
