Shadowverse is Getting Shut Down

If you like card games, TCGs to be more specific (trading card games), then you might have heard of a little game called Shadowverse. It’s a TCG that came out right around the time Hearthstone was becoming popular. If you’re late to the Shadowverse party, then that’s what you’ll be, late to it, because the game is shutting down.

Why is Shadowverse shutting down?

The devs announced the shutdown of the game after almost a 10-year run. The reason is that they released a sequel called Shadowverse: World’s Beyond. It is basically Shadowverse, the sequel, which is also free. There’s no point in keeping the first game when World’s Beyond will continue where this game left off.

What does that leave old players? Unfortunately, players who spent money on this game will not be getting a refund. Whatever items they bought will just be removed along with the game. That’s just the peril when it comes to playing these types of games.

What was Shadowverse all about?

Shadowverse Gameplay

Shadowverse is a free-to-play digital collectible card game developed by Cygames, first released in 2016. It blends traditional card game mechanics similar to titles like Hearthstone with a strong anime-inspired presentation, including fully voiced characters, story-driven campaigns, and high-quality illustrated cards. The game is available on multiple platforms, including PC and mobile devices, which has helped it grow a large global player base.

At its core, Shadowverse revolves around strategic deck-building and turn-based battles between two players. Each player selects a class (i.e., Swordcraft, Runecraft, or Dragoncraft), and each class has its own playstyle, strengths, and unique cards. Matches are played by summoning followers, casting spells, and using amulets to control the board and reduce the opponent’s leader health from 20 to zero. One of the game’s defining mechanics is “evolution,” which allows players to temporarily power up their followers during a match, adding an extra layer of tactical depth.

How successful was Shadowverse?

To be able to go for 10 years is an accomplishment in itself. Shadowverse has been quite successful overall, but in a very specific way, it’s strong as a long-running niche hit rather than a dominant global giant like Hearthstone. Its success comes from steady revenue, a loyal player base, and a strong presence in Japan, even if it never fully took over the global market.

Steam Charts

In its early years, Shadowverse performed very well for a new digital card game. It generated millions of dollars and built a large player base across mobile and PC. On Steam alone, it has earned over $50 million in revenue and sold around 3 million copies, which is impressive for a free-to-play card game platform release. The game also maintained a healthy ecosystem with frequent expansions and esports tournaments, helping it stay relevant for years after launch.

In conclusion

All good things come to an end, but don’t pout, since World’s Beyond is a worthy successor, and it has some good reviews to back it up. Maybe just pout if you did spend money on this game.
