Shenmue was a groundbreaking game back when it first came out in 1999. Its sequel, released in 2001, got as much praise as it did as well. However, the games didn’t do well financially, which is why Shenmue 3 took 18 years to make. Now, Shenmue 3 Enhanced is coming out 7 years later.
When is Shenmue 3 coming out, and what’s new?
The main upgrade for Shenmue 3 Enhanced is the graphics. The game isn’t 10 years old yet, and it did come out for the PS4 and Xbox One during that time period. The game doesn’t look that old, but if you have an eye for detail, you may see some of the graphical updates.

Several qualities of life updates were added, but we can’t tell which ones yet. Players can even play the game without the enhanced add-ons. Why would you want to do that if you already have the original? It’s up to you. This is something for new players to discover and experience the game for the first time. There is also no clear date when the enhanced version will be released.

What controversies did Shenmue 3 have before it launched?
The game was never meant to be made. After Shenmue 2 in 2001, SEGA had no plans for the franchise. It also didn’t help that time that SEGA was already losing money. The death of the Dreamcast and SEGA getting out of the console race put an end to this series and others.
Crowdfunding issues
Shenmue 3 was originally going to be crowdfunded back in 2015, and it did. The problem is that EPIC Games came in and paid for a timed exclusive. The studio got good money, but fans and backers were not happy. They paid for the game to be made, and now they have to wait for it to be released for STEAM and other consoles. EPIC Game’s exclusive deal was blasted all over the place.
Refunds and more drama

Naturally, since the backers weren’t getting what they wanted, they wanted refunds. The studio behind Shenmue 3 refused to give the refunds, which led to more PR nightmares. EPIC Games had no choice but to give refunds to those who wanted them. After all, they created this mess by offering the time exclusive, but the studio isn’t void of the blame either.
Why was Shenmue 3 a big deal?

Shenmue 3 was a big deal because it represented the long-awaited return of a legendary but abandoned series, continuing the story of Ryo Hazuki nearly two decades after Shenmue II left fans hanging; for years, the project seemed impossible due to the commercial failure of the earlier games under Sega, making its eventual revival led by creator Yu Suzuki and funded by passionate fans through a record-breaking Kickstarter announced at E3 2015 feel like a rare moment where fan demand directly brought a “dead” franchise back to life, turning the game into a symbol of gaming nostalgia, community power, and the idea that even the most unlikely projects can finally happen.
