Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Is Shutting Down

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis was released back in September of 2023. Nearly 3 years later, the game is closing its servers. That sucks, but hey, like a lot of these Square Enix gacha games, they never really last. It seems the shelf life of these games is around 3 to 5 years.

What is happening with this game?

FF7 Ever Crisis is shutting down its servers on October 6, 2026. By this time (July 2026), the game is still operational. However, why would you continue to play if the game is shutting down? You can play, but make sure not to spend any money on it.

There’s no concrete evidence or reason as to why they are shutting down. Most people say that it’s not making enough money. Maybe that is the only true reason because there seems to be a fan base for this game. This is unfortunate; just add it to the list of dying or dead Square Enix gacha games.

What is Ever Crisis all about?

Overworld Look

Think of it as the FF 7 Remake that some people wanted. Just a graphical upgrade of the original FF 7 (see image above). The graphics look cartoony, but the combat makes it look like the actual FF 7 Rebirth (see image below). When you think about it, that’s what the original game was as well. You have blocky characters in the overworld, and they look better in combat.

Aside from just making it look like a Remake, they added a lot of lore and story. Content that is not even in the original, Remake, and other FF 7 media. You have a backstory of young Sephiroth, which actually sounded cool. The shutdown will not progress the game anymore, so that’s sad.

Finally, it is a gacha game, so the concept is there. You have to pull for your preferred character weapons, since you do get all the characters for free. It’s the arsenal that you have to put some effort and grind for.  The combat as well has that gacha feel to it even if it is turn-based.

A possible comeback?

The upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance is a remake or reimagining of one of Square Enix’s dead FF gacha games called Brave Exvius. People are excited for this, and it seems like Square may have an interest in reviving some of these dead gacha games. Octopath Traveller 0 is another example. While not a gacha, it was a mobile game that Square Enix turned into its own game, and it was a success. There’s a chance that Ever Crisis might come back as a standalone single-player game, which will make it an actual FF 7 Remake, at least for some people.

What was the general reception for Ever Crisis?

Steam Page

It was a little bit of a mix; if we look at the Steam page of the game, it is mixed. Despite the announcement of the shutdown, the game hasn’t been bombed with negative reviews. Maybe people were just tired, and review bombing it wouldn’t do anything anyway. Regardless, it had its fans, and people did pay money. A lot of them are disappointed due to the discontinuation of the young Sephiroth storyline.
