James Bond 007 First Light is the latest and newest video game from the Bond franchise. It came out in May of this year, and the last James Bond game was Cypher 007. That game came out back in 2023, and it wasn’t a Triple-A game as they would call it. Regardless, First Light is a commercial success, but it is mired in some controversies.
Development and announcement
The game was in development with the name PROJECT 007 back in 2020. While people assumed that it was a James Bond game, not many cared about it. After all, the Bond games weren’t really that groundbreaking other than Golden Eye for the N64. Regardless, production went on, and the very first trailer came out in June of 2025. Suffice to say, people loved what they saw, but the game wasn’t actually that hyped, in a matter of speaking.
What is the game about?
Let’s take a look at just a portion of what James Bond 007 First Light is all about.
Story
Unlike previous James Bond games that adapted films, First Light introduces an entirely new cast of allies and villains while remaining faithful to the spirit of Ian Fleming’s novels. Familiar characters such as M and Q appear to guide Bond during his early career, helping establish the relationships that define the James Bond universe. The narrative combines espionage, political intrigue, betrayals, and cinematic action sequences, creating a story that feels like an original Bond film rather than an adaptation.
Gameplay
Stealth plays a major role throughout the game. Bond can eavesdrop on conversations, gather intelligence, distract guards, hack security systems, pick locks, and infiltrate heavily guarded facilities without raising alarms. Instead of relying solely on disguises like Hitman, the game emphasizes Bond’s charisma, spycraft, and cutting-edge gadgets, allowing players to manipulate situations while maintaining the feel of a classic espionage thriller.

Action sequences provide a contrast to the stealth-focused gameplay. Bond participates in hand-to-hand combat, intense gunfights, high-speed car chases, and explosive set pieces inspired by the James Bond films. Missions often shift seamlessly between quiet infiltration and large-scale action, giving players the freedom to adapt their tactics depending on how situations unfold. This balance between stealth and spectacle captures the cinematic excitement associated with the franchise.
Some Controversies
Although 007 First Light was met with widespread anticipation, it was not without controversy before and after its release. One of the earliest debates centered on the game’s portrayal of a younger, original version of James Bond rather than basing the character on a classic film actor. There were also some controversies where people felt that Bond was being bossed around too much by women in the game, instead of being an Alpha Male that some make him out to be.

Success of the game
Despite these controversies, 007 First Light became one of the biggest successes in the history of IO Interactive. Critics praised its cinematic storytelling, globe-trotting missions, stealth mechanics, and authentic recreation of the James Bond fantasy. Review aggregators awarded the game strong scores, with many reviewers describing it as one of the best James Bond games ever produced.

Commercially, the game achieved an impressive launch. It sold approximately 1.5 million copies within its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-selling title in IO Interactive’s history. Within its first week, sales climbed to roughly 2.7 million copies, and shortly afterward surpassed 3 million units worldwide. The studio described the game’s performance as exceeding expectations and confirmed that it had become one of the company’s most successful releases.
