There is a new Resident Evil movie coming out this year, but we don’t know much about it. However, recent news has been picked up, and we can at least say some things about it. With no official images or videos, we’re flying blind here, but we can just speculate with the information that we got.
It has nothing to do with the games
Zach Cregger (the director) stated that the movie will have nothing to do with the games. None of the popular characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, etc., will be popping up. In fact, not even Mila Jovovich’s Alice will be showing up here (why would she?).

Is that a bad thing
It isn’t entirely a bad thing if you are a casual audience. Perhaps, the fans of the games who play the games may be turned off. While it has nothing to do with the games, there’s a chance that elements from the games will pop up. You can have UMBRELLA as the main villain, as always. Even the shows on Netflix had Umbrella, there were even if there were little to no characters from the game.

Zach Cregger has also created some very good horror movies, such as Barbarian and the blockbuster hit Weapons. Maybe a Resident Evil game under him without the characters can be good. After all, this movie is also for the casual audience. Those who just love horror but don’t play the games. If the movie turns out to be good, then that’s all that matters.

Movie synopsis so far
We’d like to thank World of Reel for this scoop, and for what the initial plot of the movie is. The movie will be around 90 minutes long, and World of Reel says that it is like Fury Road with horror elements and zombies.
The initial plot is that the story follows Brya, and he has to deliver a briefcase to Raccoon City during an outbreak. So we got Raccoon City here, and initial test screenings say that the movie is good. That is actually a good sign. While it may not have any characters or anything to do with the games, if the reception is good, then that’s a great state to be in. We can only wait for the official trailer to come out and judge for ourselves.
Will this movie surpass the previous ones?
It’s hard to say, after all, there are two branches of movies, the live-action and the animated/CGI ones. The animated movies are outmatched; they pretty much have the characters and game integrated into them. While not all of them are good, from a visual standpoint, they are amazing.

The live-action Wes Anderson movies were also decent. Not all of them were a hit, but all of them were promising, and they made money. If they didn’t make money, then the movies wouldn’t continue to be made. It’s been 9 years since the last one, “THE FINAL CHAPTER” came out, so a new breed of RE movies may just be perfect for the taking.
