Wuchang Fallen Feather Development Team Laid Off

Wuchang Fallen Feathers was a game released last July of 2025. It’s another action-adventure game focusing on being a Soulslike game. So it’s hard, and it has that ancient Chinese aesthetic to it. The game’s development team has been another victim of layoffs, and the director was forced out of the company.

What happened to everyone on the dev team?

Sources from Bilibili stated that the director Xia Siyuan was forced out of the company. While the other devs were asked if they were interested in working on other titles. For now, we have information that the devs were all laid off. Xia is still working on other games, just not under the banner of the company behind Wuchang. There’s no real reason why, but maybe we can determine with some theories.

Low sales and problems with the games

Steam Ratings
Recent state of positive reviews on Steam

If you look at the reviews on Steam, it says Mostly/Very Positive. That’s because the game has been fixed and updated since its launch 9 months ago. However, at launch, the game was a brutally buggy mess. Taking a look at some of the older and maybe newer negative reviews, a lot of the players state that the game had the usual launch problems for some titles. Problems like glitches, graphical bugs, freezing, and crashing.

That may have turned off potential customers initially at launch. While it may have recovered, it’s probably too late for the team. The low sales are potentially another problem. The game has only sold over 1 million copies so far. That’s a fine number, but for a game like this, it needs more to be a success. It may reach better heights later on, but time just ran out for the dev team.

What is the game all about?

Let’s discuss the game a bit, why it’s good, and what the fuss is all about.

Story and world

The game takes place in the war-torn land of Shu during a period of political instability and widespread suffering. The environment is designed to feel oppressive and eerie, filled with abandoned villages, corrupted temples, and grotesque creatures. Drawing inspiration from Chinese history and mythology, the world feels both grounded and surreal, creating a constant sense of dread and mystery.

The World

At its core, the story explores identity, memory, and transformation. Wuchang (the playable character) herself suffers from amnesia, forcing players to piece together her past while dealing with her present condition. The Feathering Disease serves as both a literal and symbolic element, representing decay, loss of humanity, and the fear of becoming something unrecognizable. The narrative unfolds gradually, encouraging exploration and interpretation rather than direct exposition.

Gameplay and progression

Like any Soulslike genre, it emphasizes precise combat, stamina management, and challenging enemies. Players must learn attack patterns, time dodges carefully, and make strategic use of abilities. The game also introduces a system tied to the Feathering Disease, where gaining power may come at a cost, adding a risk-reward dynamic to character progression.

Gameplay

Combat in the game is fluid and aggressive, allowing players to chain attacks, counter enemies, and use special skills. Different weapons and abilities offer varied playstyles, giving players flexibility in how they approach battles. Mastery of timing and positioning is essential, as enemies are often unforgiving and can quickly overwhelm unprepared players.
