It looks like Valve (Steam) isn’t the only one getting sued in the past few months. Sony, the makers of PlayStation consoles and exclusive games, have also been sued. It seems the message is the same: Sony and Valve are being sued for being monopolies. This lawsuit seems to be focused on the UK market, but when does it stop?
What is the lawsuit all about?

The central claim is that Sony abused its position in the gaming market by controlling how digital games are sold on PlayStation consoles. According to the lawsuit, all digital games and add-ons must be purchased through the PlayStation Store, which prevents any competing digital marketplaces from operating on the platform.
Because of this system, the lawsuit argues that Sony effectively created a monopoly over digital PlayStation sales. This lack of competition allegedly allowed the company to set prices freely and charge more than it should have.
Sony is allegedly overpricing their customers in the UK

A major issue in the case is the price of digital games. The claim states that Sony charged developers a commission of about 30 percent for selling games on the PlayStation Store, and that this cost was passed on to consumers. As a result, digital games were sometimes significantly more expensive than physical versions.
In some examples presented in court, digital titles were priced much higher than the same games sold in retail stores. The lawsuit argues that players had little choice but to pay these higher prices, especially with consoles that rely heavily on digital downloads.
Why are both Sony and Valve being sued in the UK?

We really can’t say; most people are saying that the UK is running out of money, so it’s open season on big game companies. Epic hasn’t been sued yet, or Apple, since they do have some kind of video game store for their online apps and games.
Plus, it isn’t the government that’s suing them, but mostly independent firms that claim they are representing the customers. Some people see it for what it is, and it’s a cash grab, but we wouldn’t know because we don’t know the specifics or when this lawsuit will end.
What could happen next?
This lawsuit is significant because it could change how digital games are sold, not just on PlayStation but across the entire gaming industry. If Sony loses, it may be forced to allow more competition or adjust its pricing system. The case is also part of a larger global trend where big tech companies are being challenged over control of digital marketplaces and potential monopolies.
This is why Valve is also getting sued, since they have mostly the control or monopoly, as they say in the PC department, whereas Sony is mostly for consoles, particularly their consoles. If this lawsuit ends badly for Sony, they could compensate their customers with a certain amount. If it is true that Sony has over 10 million players in the UK, then each of them could get around $100 to $200, but nothing is certain.
