Why was Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness loved?

There are a plethora of reasons why the game is loved by a lot of people. Even though the sales weren’t that high, this game has a cult following, and below are potential reasons why the game did well to gain those fans.

A darker and more mature storyline

Gale of Darkness Story

Unlike most Pokémon games, this one leans into a darker, more mature tone. Set in the Orre region, a harsh, almost desert-like world, it tells a story about corruption, stolen Pokémon, and emotional restoration. The concept of “Shadow Pokémon,” which have had their hearts artificially closed, adds a deeper emotional layer. Instead of simply catching creatures, you’re rescuing them, which gives the gameplay a stronger sense of purpose.

This isn’t a game where you just want to become the best trainer in the world and fight Gym Leaders. The story is really plucked out of traditional RPG stories. It has Pokémon, but the elements of your traditional JRPG. While not the first one in the series to do it, the story hooks you in.

Shadow Pokémon are cool

The Shadow Pokémon system is one of the game’s standout features. These Pokémon behave differently in battle, sometimes disobeying or entering a “reverse mode.” You must gradually purify them, which adds a strategic and emotional progression layer. The Purification Chamber mechanic encourages thoughtful team-building, and the “Snag Machine” lets you capture Pokémon directly from enemy trainers, which is a rare and exciting twist in the series.

This was a cool concept before Mega Evolution and those other forms were introduced. Nowadays, we have Alolan forms and others. We could say that the Shadow Pokémon forms were on a league of their own. Other than ROM hacks and fan games, Shadow Pokémon have not made a comeback. Plus, he’s on the cover, which is Shadow Lugia.

Fun combat mechanics

A lot of the battles are in double battles. Not new, but the intense mechanics make it interesting because these battles can be fun or straight-up challenging. Catching Pokémon isn’t the same as the usual ones. You battle trainers who have a Shadow Pokémon. You weaken that Shadow Pokémon and use a Snag Machine to purify it. Then, have that Shadow Pokémon purified later, and it will become a part of your team. This game has none of those random encounters and trading mechanics, which makes it different and a lot of fun.

Will  Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness re-ignite that childhood nostalgia, or will this classic just be another game in the mountain?
