Back in 2020, there was the infamous NVIDIA Leak. Basically, a lot of Square Enix games that were yet to be made or even released were all shown to the world. Think back in 20202, all of these were just speculations, but one of those leaks included two things. These were the Final Fantasy IX Remake and the Final Fantasy IX anime. It’s been six years later, no news on the remake, but the anime has got some steam to it.
Is Final Fantasy IX’s anime proceeding?
According to the information we have now from EuroVisual, the anime is in development and not in production. This means that it’s still in the conception phase. Pretty much things like art, storyboards, story writing, and others. However, the plot that we have is as follows.
Vivi has six children, and the story takes place after the end of the game. We’re not sure if there is a time skip, but one of his kids is encased in Crystal. That’s when the show takes off, to find out the mystery of what is happening. The show is estimated to have 10 episodes with around 20 plus minutes each.

Will this anime be good?
We can’t really say because we have no trailer or anything to help us determine the quality. All we have are some artworks depicting what is going to happen. We can’t even verify if these artworks are legit, but they do look good. Just a little refresher, this will not be the first time that Final Fantasy has dived into the world of anime. They have had four different adaptations of Final Fantasy into the anime fold.

Anime under the Final Fantasy name

Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals (1994)
- This takes place hundreds of years after the end of Final Fantasy V, with the main characters as descendants of the playable characters.
Final Fantasy Unlimited (2001)
- This ran for 25 episodes and has nothing to do with any of the games. It was a standalone series that did feature elements, monsters, themes, and even a Cid, like any FF game.
Final Fantasy VII: Last Order (2005)
- A one-episode special that showcases events before the start of FF7. It even tied in characters not shown in the original FF7 but would appear in their mobile game, Before Crisis.
Final Fantasy XV: Brotherhood (2016)
- An official tie-in anime series to the game. It takes place before FF15, and it shows backstories to the main characters. If you wanted to connect more to the game, you’d better watch this one.
What about the FF9 Remake?
Still no word on the remake, if there ever is one. It’s worth noting that all the leaks in the NVIDIA disaster came out, except for the FF9 Remake, and the anime is now in the works. We’ll just have to wait and see, but for now, let’s just hope that the anime will be successful, so that we can possibly get more FF9 content in the future.
