There’s trouble brewing at Eidos Montréal , and that trouble is that they cancelled a game that was near completion. That game was called Wildlands, and we have no trailer, images, or footage about it. This is news because the game had used up $100 million in terms of its production budget.
What is this game, and what happened?
A lot of this information comes to us from INSIDER GAMING. So we’d like to thank them for their exclusive take. The game Wildlands was supposed to be finished until funding was removed. It pretty much got cancelled, and whether they’ll continue working on it is unclear.
From what we’ve gathered, the game was supposed to be a third-person action game set in an open world. Players would control a character named River. That’s the only information that we have right now, and no media to show for it.
Slight history of Eidos Montréal
Eidos Montréal was established in 2007 in Montréal, Canada, during a period when the city was rapidly becoming a global hub for video game development. The studio was created as part of the expansion of Eidos Interactive, with the goal of building a new AAA development team focused on ambitious, story-driven games. From the beginning, the studio aimed to combine cinematic storytelling with immersive gameplay, positioning itself as a key player in the industry. Just to clarify, Eidos Montréal is not the same as Eidos Interactive.
Purchase by Square Enix and breakthroughs

Eidos Montréal was bought by Square Enix around 2009. The studio’s first major breakthrough came with the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011. As a prequel to the original Deus Ex series, the game was praised for its deep narrative, player choice, and cyberpunk atmosphere. Its success firmly established Eidos Montréal as a capable AAA developer. This was followed by Deus Ex: Manind Divided, which continued the story and expanded on the gameplay systems, further solidifying the studio’s reputation for immersive simulations.

Beyond Deus Ex, the studio became heavily involved in other major franchises. It collaborated with Crystal Dynamics on the Tomb Raider series, contributing significantly to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Later, the studio took on a major Marvel project with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which stood out for its strong writing, character interactions, and single-player focus at a time when many superhero games leaned toward live-service models.

Being sold off by Square Enix and its current state
In 2022, a major shift occurred when Square Enix sold Eidos Montréal, along with other Western studios, to Embracer Group. This transition marked a new chapter for the studio, giving it more independence while also placing it within a large network of global development teams. Despite industry challenges such as restructuring and project cancellations in recent years, Eidos Montréal continues to work on new projects, maintaining its focus on narrative-driven and immersive gaming experiences.
They are still making games today, not under the Square Enix brand anymore. Their big game coming up is the new Fable. That game isn’t being welcomed with warm embraces, but it hasn’t come out yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.
