Super Mario Maker 2 Levels Removed Because of Hashtags

Super Mario Maker 2 is already seven years old now. It’s still fun, and people are still making levels for everyone to play. People still play them, while the news of Super Mario Maker 3 isn’t happening any time soon, Nintendo has been removing some user-created levels for the game.

What and why is Nintendo removing levels?

Advertising Hashtags

You read that correctly, Nintendo has been removing some user-created levels on Super Mario Maker 2. The reason is because of the hashtags that some of these levels have. What do hashtags have to do with the levels being removed? The answer is that the creators are intentionally or unintentionally putting marketing hashtags.

This is a bit broad because Nintendo has a rule about not marketing anything on these levels. Whether they are hashtags or possibly known brands on the level itself. The levels can be detected or reported by the players. If this does breach Nintendo’s rules, then the level will be taken down. Aside from these marketing rules, there are also those that are around the content rules.

This means that players cannot create inappropriate levels. We can classify them as sexual or violent content. Players are creative, so if you see any levels that are breaching these rules, then be sure to report them.

Do they have to remove the levels?

Some people think that if the hashtags are the issue, then Nintendo should have just told the creators to change them or remove them. Unfortunately, Nintendo just nuked all those levels that violated the terms without prior warning. It is a shame, people will just have to make those levels again and avoid the hashtags, or just make new ones.

Interesting level requirements before uploading

Level Creation

Rules about content aside, there are certain requirements before you can upload your created level. These were also present in the first Mario Maker game, but we’ll just summarize them in case you want to make your own.

Level must be beatable.

Before you can upload the level, you have to beat it. So, all of those crazy and impossible levels that people make were actually completed by the creators. However, some of them cheat because they have the impossible level, and they put a secret door that allows them to teleport to the end zone. There’s also a time limit for each level, which is adjustable. You can make it as low as a couple of seconds and something around 300 seconds.

Optional level rules

You can add rules like players must defeat X number of enemies. It could also be to collect X amount of coins. Optional rules are always fun, and they add a different flavor to your level or anyone else’s.

In Closing

It’s unfortunate that those levels were removed, but now, you know not to upload them with questionable hashtags. After all, making levels as intricate as those takes hours and effort. Don’t forget about the fact that those levels had good traction and reactions from other people.
