Fortnite was a juggernaut back in 2017, even though it followed the footsteps of PUBG. The original version wasn’t even released until April 16, 2026. From then on out, Fortnite became one of the most popular games around the world, but Fortnite has slowly been declining in terms of popularity.
Is Fortnite’s popularity declining?
Fortnite is not dead, but there is clear evidence that its popularity has declined compared to its peak years. Data shows that daily player averages dropped from over 2 million in late 2024 to around 1.2 to 1.4 million by early 2026.
In addition, reports suggest the player base shrank significantly over time, with one estimate noting a 42% drop from earlier highs. More recently, Fortnite also saw a 29% decrease in playtime during 2025, reflecting lower engagement even among active players. These numbers indicate that while millions still play, fewer people are playing as often as before.
Why is Fortnite’s popularity declining?
There are a couple of potential reasons, and we can’t pinpoint if any or all of them are the root cause of it all. Fortnite is still making money, but not as grandly as it used to, but it’s nowhere near done.
Players are getting older.
A vast number of players during the height of Fortnite’s popularity were younger. Probably kids to teenagers, and almost 10 years later, those players have grown older. They probably moved on to other games, and since they are growing older, their preferences have changed.
More games to choose from
Part of getting older is broadening one’s horizons to newer games. A lot of players, when they are young they stick to their old games. They expand and find newer games, and since Fortnite is free, there are a lot of good and free games out there.
The battle royale genre is becoming stale
Like any other genre, the battle royale one has gotten stale. Back then, battle royale was the talk of the town. They were coming out left and right, and every IP wanted to have their own battle royale. Nowadays, it has gotten stale, Fortnite is still there, and PUBG is still a thing.
The release of Save the World
A lot of people are looking forward to the release of Fortnite Save the World. It was the original concept of Fortnite before it turned into a battle royale. The battle royale is pretty much raking in money, so Save the World was shoved to the side.
Now, the game mode is being released, and people say it’s probably an effort to attract more new players. After all, it is a mode in the game, so you just have to download the same game. It is a horde survival game, so it focuses a lot on cooperation and survival. It uses the building elements from Fortnite, so that should be fun in a way.
Fortnite may not be as popular and as hot as it used to be, but that doesn’t mean that it’s dwindling. This is still Epic’s cash cow, and they’re still running events, so it may get back to number one soon.
