GameStop Offered to Buy eBay

GameStop and eBay are two big names in the field of video games. Well, eBay is more than just video games, but people can buy stuff from eBay in the field of video games. The CEO of GameStop, Ryan Cohen, made an attempt to buy eBay, and how did it end?

What happened during this alleged purchase?

Based on the information that we have (everyone seems to be saying this), GameStop offered to buy eBay for $56 million. Half of that offer would be in cash and the other half in stock. That offer alone sounds insane, which is why eBay rejected it. The board believed that the offer sounded bad and fake. They’re also doubtful if GameStop has that kind of money. Regardless, it seems Cohen is still trying to take a stab at it when it comes to buying eBay.

Why GameStop wants to buy eBay

We really can’t answer that since a lot of people are confused about this. Forget about the fact that GameStop may not have that kind of money; it is fun to speculate why they want to buy and what could happen.

Expanding the GameStop brand

GameStop Store

Buying eBay would instantly make GameStop a much larger player in global e-commerce. Instead of being viewed mainly as a video game retailer, the company could reposition itself as a technology and online marketplace business. This broader identity could attract new customers, business partners, and investors. This wouldn’t just be about video games anymore when GameStop can access the large customer base that eBay already has.

GameStop has invested in improving its online business, but competing with major e-commerce companies is difficult. eBay already has advanced technology, payment systems, seller tools, and logistics partnerships. Acquiring these capabilities could allow GameStop to strengthen its digital presence much faster than developing similar systems independently.

Broader income streams

An acquisition could also create new revenue opportunities. GameStop primarily earns money by selling products directly to customers, while eBay generates revenue by charging fees on transactions between buyers and sellers. This marketplace model provides recurring income without requiring eBay to own the inventory being sold, making it an attractive business model.

Despite these potential benefits, acquiring eBay would be extremely difficult. eBay is a much larger company than GameStop in terms of market value and annual revenue. Financing such a deal would require tens of billions of dollars and would likely involve significant debt, issuing new shares, or finding outside investors. Integrating two businesses with very different operations would also be complex and could take years. This is a coincidental approach since Sony announced that it will cease physical copies by 2028, so GameStop needs to adapt.

Final Thoughts

It does sound absurd because some people would think, does GameStop even have that kind of money? It doesn’t sound too good as well if the deal does fall through. While both entities are good at what they do, maybe it’s better that way. Keep both of them separated; if it ain’t broke, why fix it, but GameStop does need to adapt in the coming years.
